Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and Something Neu

The South Jersey Jazz Society is proud to announce it 2024 Spring Jazz Series “Something Borrowed, Something Blue and Something Neu.” This three part event will start on April 3 with a tribute to the unique jazz vocalist Blossom Dearie. The first of this series will feature Sharon Sable paying homage to this amazing songstylist. The group will consist of Sharon Sable on vocals, Joe Holt, piano, Tom Baldwin, bass, and Steve Abshire, guitar. This event will be held at Gregory’s, 900 Shore Road, Somers Point.

On May 8 the focus will swith to the blues root of jazz with the Charlie Apicella Trio with Brad Whiteley on organ, Steve Johns on drums and Charlie Apicella on guitar.  Charlie studied composition and improvisation with musical titans Yusef Lateef and Pat Martino and was trained as a historian by Archie Shepp and Dr. Billy Taylor. This event will also be held at Gregory’s, 900 Shore Road, Somers Point.

On June 7 the Andrew Neu Big Band will perform on the William Morrow Beach on New Jersey Ave. and the Bay in Somers Point. Andrew Neu is a renowned New York based saxophonist who will bring a stellar line up of 18 of some of the finest first call musicians from the tri-state area when he takes the stage on June 7 for this free outdoor event. This concert will act a springboard for the 2024 Concert on the Beach series that was recognized in 2023 by USA Today as the best outdoor concert venue in the United States.

These events energizes the local economy during a non-peak time of year, facilitates performing arts, and attracting a multi-racial and diverse demographic.

The South Jersey Jazz Society is a 501 c 3 nonprofit corporation founded in 2004. Started as an annual two day jazz festival, the organization has grown to offer a year round calendar of jazz events including, but not limited to, twice monthly concerts, a spring series, educational events and a three day festival that has featured national and internationally known jazz greats including, Pat Martino, Jimmy Cobb, Houston Person, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Pat Bianchi and many others.

The South Jersey Jazz Society also awards scholarships to aspiring jazz artist currently in either middle school or high school.  These scholarships provide recipients to train one on one with a professional jazz educator.

In addition, since its inception the South Jersey Jazz Society has donated over $30,000 to support the music and arts programs in local public schools.
