The band stayed on to tour there for one year. The list of musicians with whom Phil Woods has performed and/or recorded reads like a Who’s Who of Jazz: Benny Goodman (with whom he toured the Soviet Union in 1962\, again for the State Department)\, Benny Carter\, Clark Terry (with whom he and Melba Liston founded the “Big Bad Band”)\, Bill Evans\, Michel Legrand\, Oliver Nelson\, Thelonious Monk\, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Barnet are just a few of those stars. In 1968\, Phil went to live in Europe where he formed the European Rhythm Machine. Together they played all over the world until 1973 when Woods returned to the United States. After a brief stay in Los Angeles\, Phil moved back to the New York area and formed The Phil Woods Quartet (now Quintet).  Two of the original members of that group\, Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin\, are still with him almost thirty-five years later. Philip Wells Woods is a consistent poll winner\, the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from East Stroudsburg University and a 1994 inductee into The American Jazz Hall of Fame. The New School University presented him with the Beacons in Jazz Award in 2001\, and he is a 2007 NEA Jazz Master. In 2009 DePaul University presented Phil with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. In 2005\, Jazzed Media released the documentary Phil Woods: A Life in E Flat – Portrait of a Jazz Legend\, directed by Rich Lerner and produced by Graham Carter. On September 4\, 2015\, he performed a tribute to Charlie Parker with Stringsat the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild and announced at the end of the show that he would be retiring. He died on September 29\, 2015\, at the age of 83.

SUMMARY:Hot Club of Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Hot Club of Philadelphia\nFeaturing Barry Wahrhaftig\, Joe Arnold\,\nDan Pearce\, and Josh Machiz. \nOcean City Free Public Library\, 1735 Simpson Ave\, Ocean City \n  \n \nThe Hot Club of Philadelphia was started in 2001 by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig. \nThey are an acoustic ensemble\, dedicated to playing ‘Gypsy Jazz.’ That’s the term used to describe the music pioneered by the legendary original ‘Hot Club of France Quintet\,’ which was led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli.  Django and Grappelli were attempting to do their own version of American ‘Hot Jazz\,’ as played by artists like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They used acoustic guitars\, bass and violin\, rather than horns and drums. Grappelli and Django added some French and Gypsy flavor and created a blend of music that is quite popular and accessible. The HCPhilly mixes the original style of the HCOF\, along with their own modern influences. \nThe band performs as a trio\, quartet\, quintet\, etc.  There have been some changes in the line up through the years. Bassist Jim Stager has been with the group from the beginning. \nJoshua Machiz & Dylan Taylor also share bass duties. Dan Pearce is the 2nd guitarist\, and violinist Joseph Arnold is a key part of the group’s recordings and shows\, and clarinetists Bob Butryn and Paul Butler are also mainstays. \nThe band features vocalist Phyllis Chapell and they have collaborated with Denise King. \nTheir second CD\, ‘Gypsy Routes\,’ released in 2005\, features Chapell singing pieces like Edith Piaf’s ‘La Foule’ in French\, and ‘Cry Me a River’ [in English]. Barry also sings; early jazz pieces like ‘Georgia on My Mind\,’ and standards that were done by Sinatra or Nat ‘King’ Cole. Their eclectic mix also includes interpretations of songs by the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. \nThe group has performed for a wide range of venues\, including; The Kimmel Center’s PIFA Festival\, the area’s first ‘Diner en Blanc\,’ The World Café Live\, Sellersville Theater\, WHYY-NPR\, Musikfest-Bethlehem\, Pastorius Park Summer Festival\, the Philadelphia Folk Festival\, S.J. Pinelands Jazz Fest\, Media ‘Jazz BY Night\,’ series\, Rose Tree Park Summer Concerts\, The Barnes Foundation\, Phila Museum of Art\, the Mid-West Gypsy Swing Festival\, to name a few. \nTheir first CD\, ‘Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams\,’ 2010 was very well received\, and their new release\, ‘Gypsy Routes\,’ features guest spots by Howard Alden\, Titi Bamberger\, Larry McKenna\, Phyllis Chapell and Marty Grosz. One of the tracks\, Django Reinhardt’s ‘Tears\,’ was # 1 on Philly Jazz radio WRTI’s Hot 11 Countdown. \nFor more about The Hot Club of Philly\, visit www.reverbnation.com/hotclubphilly. \n
