Cocktails will be available for purchase prior to the show and during intermission.\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Bebop into the Bayfest  with Benny Benack III…B-there!\nBy age 30\, trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has proven to be that rarest of talents: not only a fiery trumpet player with a stirring command of the postbop trumpet vernacular in the vein of Kenny Dorham and Freddie Hubbard\, but also a singer with a sly\, mature\, naturally expressive delivery in the post-Sinatra mold\, performing standards and his own astute songs with a thrilling sense of showmanship. His superb intonation and bracing virtuosity enable him to handle astounding feats of originally composed vocalese (complex solos with written lyrics). On top of it all\, he’s a highly capable pianist as well. \nBenny performs internationally as an Emcee/Host for Postmodern Jukebox\, the vintage music collective famed for canny old-school covers of modern pop. In early 2020 he released A Lot of Livin’ to Do\, the follow-up to his well-received 2017 debut One of a Kind. This sophomore effort\, richly varied in mood and brimming with bop inflection\, features bassist extraordinaire and Jazz ambassador Christian McBride (whose Grammy-award winning Big Band frequently calls upon Benny in the trumpet section) and drummer/producer Ulysses Owens\, Jr.\, as well as the radiant Takeshi Ohbayashi on piano and Rhodes. \n \nAlongside his global touring as a straight-ahead/contemporary bandleader\, Benny has appeared as a trumpet soloist in more commercial circles alongside Josh Groban\, Ben Folds\, fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi\, Ann Hampton Callaway and more. He’s been featured at Birdland\, Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, Mezzrow\, Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle and other leading New York venues\, and has also been a special guest with the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops Orchestra\, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his television debut in NBC’s short-lived\, SNL-inspired variety show “Maya & Marty” playing in the in-studio band led by acclaimed bassist & Broadway arranger Charlie Rosen. \nThird in a generational line of Pittsburgh jazz notables\, Benny follows in the footsteps of his trumpeter/bandleader grandfather\, Benny Benack\, Sr. (1921-86)\, and his father Benny Benack\, Jr.\, a saxophonist/clarinetist who gave the young Benny his first professional experience. Benny\, Sr. hailed from a Pittsburgh lineage that also produced Roy Eldridge\, Earl Hines\, Art Blakey\, Billy Strayhorn and so many more. He recorded the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 1960 theme song “Beat ’Em Bucs” and toured with Tommy Dorsey and Raymond Scott\, among others. He is known for his interpretations of American popular songs and has recorded albums featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael\, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Time magazine wrote\, “Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved…no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” \nIn 1997\, Charlap formed the Bill Charlap Trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation)\, now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. Charlap has recorded seven albums for Blue Note Records and received two Grammy Award nominations\, for Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and most recently The Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard. \nCharlap is the artistic director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at the 92nd Street Y. He has produced several concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center and an evening of George Gershwin’s music at the Hollywood Bowl. \nBorn in New York City\, Charlap began playing the piano at age three. His father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, who appeared on the Ed Sullivan and Perry Como shows and earned a Grammy nomination for her recording of “My Coloring Book.” In 2005\, Charlap and Stewart released the acclaimed CD\, Love Is Here To Stay (Blue Note). \nCharlap is married to renowned jazz pianist Renee Rosnes. The two artists often collaborate in a duo piano setting. Charlap and Rosnes released Double Portrait\, on the Blue Note label. \nKenny Washington (drums) was born in Brooklyn. In 1977\, while still in his teens\, he worked with Lee Konitz and his nonet. He has been a member of the Bill Charlap Trio for the past thirteen years and has performed and recorded with dozens of major artists\, giving him a discography of hundreds of titles. Artists include Benny Carter\, Betty Carter\, Johnny Griffin\, Ron Carter\, Clark Terry\, Milt Jackson\, Tommy Flanagan\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Arturo Sandoval and Benny Goodman. Washington is a noted jazz historian and radio personality; he has written liner notes and helped prepare re-releases by Art Blakey\, Count Basie and others\, and has also been a disc jockey on WBGO and Sirius satellite jazz radio. DESCRIPTION:Ignacio Berroa\nGateway Theater 738 Bay Ave\, Somers Point \nGet Your Tickets Today: All Event Ticket $100 $85 | Friday Ticket $50 $40 \n  \n“… the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro Cuban music as well as Jazz…” — Dizzy Gillespie\n  \nThe evening’s performance will feature music from Grammy winner Ignacio Berroa’s new CD\,\n“Straight Ahead From Havana”.\n \nOne of the greatest drummers of our times\, Ignacio Berroa was included in the 2011 Mp3 compilation entitled “Jazz Drumming Legends” which features some of the most renowned drummers in Jazz history. \nBorn in Havana\, Cuba\, in 1953.Ignacio originally studied violin. \nHis passion for Jazz began after hearing Nat King Cole trio and The Gleen Miller orchestra with Gene Krupa on drums. \nHe started drum lessons in1964 and by 1975 Ignacio had become Cuba’s most sought after drummer. \nIn 1980 he left his country during the Mariel boatlift and settled in New York City\, \nIn 1982\, Dizzy Gillespie invited Ignacio to join his quartet.  Ignacio was also the drummer in all the important bands Gillespie assembled until his death in 1993. \nIgnacio has also performed and recorded with Jazz Legends\, such as: McCoy Tyner\, Chick Corea\, Freddie Hubbard\, Clark Terry\, Jackie McLean\, Charlie Haden\, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Tito Puente\, to name a few. \n  \nFor more information about Ignacio Berroa\, visit www.Ignacioberroa.com. \n

Her persuasive and emotional vocals\, give an introspective approach to the lyrics.  A seamless blend that draws equally from a multitude of elements including jazz\, Blues and Pop. From the early age of ten\, this Pittsburgh born singer pursued all aspects of the musical spectrum and landed in a special place that is hers alone. Cathy has performed in many arenas\, from theaters to intimate clubs\, both domestically and internationally. Her Goal: “To take my audience on a Journey\, I want them to feel something special.”\n\nA longtime resident of Brigantine\, NJ\, Cathy Rocco\, finds herself embracing her passion for Music and the many rewards it brings. .\n\n\n\n\nA musical heavyweight\, saxophonist Alex Foster has been a part of many of the world’s most influential sounds to date. Best known in recent years for his work as the alto saxophonist in the house band of the Saturday Night Live Band\, he has also shared the stage with numerous world-class performers in varying genres. Besides being a member of the SNL house band\, he is also the musical director of the Mingus Big Band. \nIn the jazz scene\, he has been heard on recordings and has performed alongside greats such as Jaco Pastorius\, Herbie Hancock\, Clark Terry\, Jack DeJohnette\, McCoy Tyner and Miles Davis to list a few. \nHis versatility as an artist is not only present in the jazz and pop music scene\, but is also prominent in the classical realm as well\, performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Oakland Symphony\, the San Francisco Symphony and the National Symphony.
