SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Tony Miceli Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Tony Miceli Quartet\nPhiladelphia has a long history as an influential jazz hub in the U.S. It’s produced many of the world’s best known jazz musicians in a tradition that continues to this day. SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Kyle Koehler Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Kyle Koehler Trio\nOur spring shows continue on Sunday\, May 4th. Jazz organ giant KYLE KOEHLER headlines. His trio includes guest guitarist ED CHERRY & noted drummer JASON TIEMANN. \nFor three decades\, Kyle Koehler’s been one of jazz’s most important & consistent voices on organ. Influenced by organ legends Shirley Scott & Charles Earland growing up in Philly & armed with a college degree in music performance & composition\, his career path gained traction after college with a  move to NYC. There in the late ’90s\, he began leading trios & performing with top jazz artists\, with Lou Donaldon\, Jimmy Heath & David “Fathead” Newman included. Early accolades for his organ playing include “Rising Star”status from Downbeat magazine & being chosen to tour Africa as a “Jazz Ambassador” for the Kennedy Center & U.S. State Dep’t. Currently continuing to perform across the U.S.\, Europe & Japan\, he also records & does Hammond B3 educational workshops. Dedicated to keeping the organ tradition alive in jazz\, Koehler’s playing honors those great organists who preceded him. Many are no longer with us from its earlier jazz “Heyday.” Among them are Jimmy Smith\, Jimmy McGriff\, Jack McDuff\, Richard “Groove” Holmes\, Dr. Lonnie Smith & Joey DeFrancesco. \nSpecial guest guitarist ED CHERRY\, a Connecticut native\, is an expressive player with a hip\, melodic approach that’s similar to what vocalists offer in their songs. While he mentions Kenny Burrell\, Grant Green & Wes Montgomery as influences\, his style is clearly his own & unlike those who play with excessive finger notes. In his fifth decade of playing\, he’s best known for his work in Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet & big band from 1978 to ’92. Following Gillespie’s 1993 death\, Cherry began leading his own groups & recording. His resume  includes numerous leader & sideman CDs & important work with trumpeter John Faddis\, sax player Paquito D’Rivera & organists Jimmy Smith\, Dr. Lonnie Smith & John Patton.

Austin’s also done well arranging music. This was on display in a recent\, well received CD of his\, “Songs in the Key of Wonder.” It made for great jazz listening from tunes that were made famous by the legendary Stevie Wonder.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Ilya Lushtak Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz & Blues series’ next spring show is on Sunday afternoon\, May 19. It features the playing & vocal stylings of renowned jazz guitarist ILYA LUSHTAK. His N.Y. quartet includes pianist OSCAR WILLIAMS II\, bassist KYLE COLINA & drummer O.C. DAVIS. \nRussian born ILYA LUSHTAK moved with his family to San Francisco as a child. He grew up there\, as did his interest in a music career. As an adult in the 1990s\, he began getting opportunities to showcase the jazz “chops” he’d developed by getting gigs with some established & noted San Francisco jazz artists. Important among them were pianist Larry Vuckovich & saxophonist Noel Jewkes. \nWith these experiences & a newfound confidence in a jazz career\, Lushtak was motivated to move & follow his career dreams in New York City. By the early 2000s\, that paid off as he began finding performance & recording work with a long list of veteran jazz luminaries. Beginning with Frank Wess & Hank Jones\, it also included Barry Harris\, Jimmy Cobb\, Cedar Walton\, Louis Hayes\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Charles Earland\, Mel Rhyne & Jimmy Lovelace. Along with his more recent work with contemporaries David Hazeltine\, Joe Magnarelli & Grant Stewart\, Lushtak continues to record & to delight jazz audiences in performance across the U.S. & abroad.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: Radam Schwartz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Following our wildly successful Tribute to Larry McKenna earlier this month\, we are continuing on Sunday afternoon\, April 28th\, featuring jazz organist RADAM SCHWARTZ. His quartet includes noted saxophonist GENE GHEE\, rising star guitarist ILAN EISENWEIG & in-demand drummer BYRON LANDHAM. \nFor more than four-decades musician Radam Schwartz has dedicated his career to jazz as a performer & educator. Drawn to music at an early age\, he learned both piano & saxophone. He became proficient at the piano\, though by high school & in college\, including Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, his desire to be a jazz organist grew. After graduating in 1975\, the desire & hard work to become a jazz organist paid off for him in the late 1970s & continues today. His performing credits include working with many jazz artists. Notable among them are vocalists Al Hibbler & Arthur Prysock\, saxophonists David “Fathead” Newman\, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis & “Red” Prysock\, Bassist Ron Carter & guitarist Russell Malone. His resume also shows extensive recordings as a sideman & eight more as a leader. \nEqually important to Schwartz is educating people about music\, the history of jazz & mentoring young people with interest. Though New York born\, he’s resided in New Jersey since the 1970s & is hugely supportive of New Jersey’s jazz scene. He believes it deserves the same importance that’s attached to jazz in Philly & New York & has advanced that idea by teaching in a variety of New Jersey settings. Included are Rutgers University\, the Jazz Institute of NJ\, as music director\, the Middlesex County Arts High School\, as Artist-in-Residence\, Red Bank’s “Jazz Arts Academy” & “Jazz House Kids” in Montclair.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase feat. Nick Hempton
DESCRIPTION:Our Jazz & Blues Showcase returns this fall on Sunday\, September 10with the soulful\, blues playing of saxophone sensation NICK HEMPTON. Organist KYLE KOEHLER & drummer BYRON LANDHAM complete his trio of well-known jazz artists. \nNick Hempton was influenced by saxophone legends Dexter Gordon\, Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt while growing up in Australia. They became the driving force in his desire for a career in jazz & the opportunity to continue the music of those iconic saxophonists. He felt the best way to achieve this was to relocate in his 20s to New York in 2004\, the heart of jazz in the U.S. \nThe superb\, two-decade professional resume Hempton’s earned since then proved his decision was right. He worked to establish himself as a popular fixture in New York’s jazz scene by performing with jazz stalwarts Roy Hargrove\, Victor Lewis\, Larry Willis\, Peter Bernstein\, Joe Magnarelli & Jerry Weldon\, among others. \nAs Hempton’s popularity grew\, demand for his playing also did & performance opportunities at important jazz venues in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Australia & Asia opened for him. Along with continuing to perform worldwide\, he also frequently records.
