SUMMARY:V. Shayne Frederick & Co: A Joyful Jazzy Holiday
DESCRIPTION:V. Shayne Frederick is a vocalist\, pianist\, recording artist\, composer and educator with  performances spanning two decades. He has been featured at TEDx\, NPR\, a multitude of music fests\, museums\, and jazz clubs throughout the country\, in addition to curating weekly musical series at South Jazz Kitchen and JG Skyhigh\, Four Seasons Comcast within the last few years. \nAn ASCAP member\, V. Shayne also scores for film and commercial. One animated short film he scored\, “Testimony\,” has garnered critical acclaim and screenings internationally\, winning an award at the Black Star Film Festival. His musical production work has appeared in Visit Philadelphia commercials and other film media. \nV. Shayne grew up on a church piano bench next to his vocalist-pianist mother in rural North Carolina; his father performed contemporary Jazz saxophone in Philadelphia. V. Shayne’s first performances\, however\, were in the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir\, for which he quickly rose to be the director by the time he was a sophomore. \nYears later\, V. Shayne has been cited by the Broad Street Review as “one of the region’s busiest and best jazz singers\,” appointed “one to watch” and a “shining light” by All About Jazz\, and called “soulful” in Downbeat Magazine. According to WRTI\, “Frederick […] could sing about breakfast cereal and make me believe in a higher power\,” and according to WXPN\, “his stunning baritone effortlessly soars; sometimes a seductive whisper\, sometimes an exuberant belt.” Come spend some carefree time with us listening to holiday music with one of the most incredible singers! SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Nick Hempton Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz & Blues Showcase presents its season’s final fall show on Sunday\, November 10th. It features the soulful\, blues playing of saxophone sensation NICK HEMPTON. Well-known jazz musicians included in his quartet are organist PAT BIANCHI\, guitarist CHARLIE SIGLER & drummer JASON TIEMANN. \nHempton was influenced by saxophone icons Dexter Gordon\, Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt as a youngster growing up in Australia. They became the driving force in his desire for a career in jazz and an opportunity to continue the music of those jazz legends. He believed the best way to achieve that goal was to relocate to New York\, the hotbed of jazz in the U.S. He made that move in 2004\, while still in his twenties. \nThe superb professional resume Hempton’s earned since then proved his decision was right. He worked to establish himself as a fixture in NY’s  jazz scene performing with jazz stalwarts Roy Hargrove\, Victor Lewis\, Larry Willis\, Peter Bernstein\, Joe Magnarelli\, and Jerry Weldon\, among others. As his popularity grew\, demand for his playing also did and opportunities at important jazz venues in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Asia & back in Australia opened for him. He continues performing worldwide in 2024\, while also adding more recordings to his resume.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Thomas Linger Trio
DESCRIPTION:Headlining into the series’ second fall show on Sunday\, October 13th is the superb jazz pianist\, THOMAS LINGER. In-demand drummer RUDY PETSCHAUER & New York bassist CHARLIE HIMEL complete his classic piano trio. The youthful Linger’s playing continues to showcase the piano’s importance in the history of jazz. It also lets us know that it remains in good hands as he follows the piano legends who preceded him. \nNorth Carolina native Linger’s dream of a career as a jazz pianist was put into action soon after finishing college. With his skills on piano\, he chose to enter the AMERICAN JAZZ PIANIST COMPETITION\, where he won its first place prize. Continuing to pursue his dream\, he moved to New York in 2017 where he gained experience working as a pianist\, while adding to his reputation on the instrument by being one of the five finalists in the 2023 AMERICAN PIANISTS AWARDS’ competition. \nIncluded in Linger’s current\, growing resume are frequent performances at top New York jazz venues. Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Village Vanguard & Dizzy’s Club are among them. Equally   important are the noted jazz artists he’s performing & recording with. Trumpeters Joe Magnarelli & Terell Stafford\, guitarist Peter Bernstein\, drummer Joe Farnswoth & bassist Peter Washington are a few of them. In 2022\, he also made his first recording as a leader\, “Out In It.”

SUMMARY:Mike Boone Group Featuring Mekhi Boone
DESCRIPTION:Mike Boone Group Featuring Mekhi Bonne\nOCT. 12 • 9:00 P.MGREGORY’S RESTAURANT & BAROpen seating and FREE event! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE BASS\n  \nMIKE BOONE\, LEGENDARY JAZZ BASSIST \nMike began with piano lessons at the age of eight\, later attended the prestigious Eastman School of Music to study bass. After touring with Ben Vereen and Buddy Rich\, he moved to Philly in 1983. \n“What I learned from hanging out in Philadelphia and meeting all sorts of people is that jazz was an African American art form and has spiritual qualities because it does come from the blues\, which come from the church. There is definitely this connection\, and I made those connections in a way that I probably wouldn’t have made had I stayed in New York. In fact\, I probably wouldn’t be playing jazz\, so it was a blessing to come to Philly.” \nAfter embracing the upright bass\, he found himself in the company of legendary local musicians\, including John Swana\, Sid Simmons\, Byron Landham\, Shirley Scott\, and many more. Mike especially recalls his tutelage from Trudy Pitts—and Bill “Mr. C” Carney’s insistence that he convert from electric to acoustic bass. \nAs a leader\, Mike has produced a few albums of his own and is currently an adjunct professor of jazz at Temple University. Nowadays\, he is often accompanied on stage by his teenage son\, musical prodigy Mekhi Boone\, who plays drums. The bassist also has a vibrant social media life on Facebook where his provocative posts garner buzz-worthy responses. Ultimately\, for the elder Boone\, it is all about the power of music. \n“I was blessed to learn the real deal: street jazz. So I take some of that street jazz with me into the classroom and directly on the bandstand and that’s what I try to portray. I’m not trying to do a bunch of hip stuff. I’m just trying to swing my ass off. I’m trying to tap into God because that’s where all this stuff comes from anyway. I’m just trying to make people feel good and to do my job. Musicians are healers—we’re doctors\, we heal people. People come in\, and if they don’t feel good\, we’re supposed to make them feel good.” \n“They call Nashville ‘Music City\,’ but when I think of Philadelphia\, it is a true Music City—and I will always shout from the rooftops: ‘We got it!’” – Mike Boone

SUMMARY:Andy Lalasis and Musical Collusion
DESCRIPTION:Andy Lalasis and Musical Collusion\nOCT. 11 • 9:00 P.MGREGORY’S RESTAURANT & BAROpen seating and FREE event! \n \n \n \n \n \n Bassist Andy Lalasis: A career surrounded by greatness\nBy Bruce Klauber \nBassist Andy Lalasis is known as a “first call player.” For those not in the music business\, when any top-tier singer\, band\, orchestra or ensemble is in need of a bass player – whether the genre is pop\, jazz\, fusion\, rock\, funk\, country music or symphonic music – Andy Lalasis is called first. \nOn May 28\, 1978\, Resorts International Hotel/Casino\, the first legal gambling casino in New Jersey\, opened. Musicians in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas flocked to the shore. Lalasis was one of them\, moving to Smithville\, where he still resides. \nHe got his start at All That Jazz\, a place on Pacific Avenue\, playing from 2 to 5 a.m. The band was led by an artist who would become a giant in Atlantic City and elsewhere; reedman Michael Pedicin\, Jr. Bobby Young\, who would become the contractor at Steve Wynn’s Golden Nugget\, wandered in one night and was so blown away by Lalasis and the rhythm section that he offered him a job. \nThe spot within the Golden Nugget was Elaine’s lounge where the rhythm section backed a different act each week including Buddy Greco\, Keely Smith\, Joanie Sommers\, Billy Daniels\, Frank D’Rone\, and many others. \nJoining Andy and Musical Collusion on October 11th at Gregory’s will be Josh Orlando – drums\, Demetrious Pappas – Keys\, and Bob Ferguson- Trpt.

SUMMARY:Brian Bromberg "A Tribute to Scott LaFaro"
DESCRIPTION:Brian Bromberg “A Tribute to Scott LaFaro”\nOCT. 11 • 7:00 P.MGATEWAY PLAYHOUSETickets: $20 a show or $50 for all 3 shows.Tickets available at www.gatewaybythebay.org \n \n \n \n \n \n While Tucson-born\, Los Angeles-based Brian Bromberg has been equally conversant and downright virtuosic on both electric and upright basses\, he sticks strictly to the latter on his latest offering\, LaFaro. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist\, Scott LaFaro whose revolutionary contributions to the classic Bill Evans Trio still reverberate to this day\, Bromberg’s 28th as a leader shows him in an unadulterated swinging trio setting in the company of pianist Tom Zink and drummer Charles Ruggiero. An in-demand L.A. session musician and valued sideman to everyone from Stan Getz to Dave Grusin\, Billy Cobham\, Michael Bublé\, Diana Krall and countless others\, Bromberg’s solo career began in 1986\, albums like 2005’s rock-fueled Metal\, 2006’s Wood II\, and 2007’s GRAMMY®-nominated Downright Upright\, further showcase the bassist’s remarkable versatility and sheer command of his instruments. On LaFaro\, Bromberg pays heartfelt homage to the virtuosic bassist. The superpower trio of Evans\, LaFaro\, and drummer Paul Motian were committed to the idea of three equal voices\, working together for a singular musical idea and often without any musician explicitly keeping time. Inspired\, this ultimately led Bromberg to lead his trio on a gorgeous album.
