SUMMARY:Hot Club of Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Hot Club of Philadelphia\nFeaturing Barry Wahrhaftig\, Joe Arnold\,\nDan Pearce\, and Josh Machiz. \nOcean City Free Public Library\, 1735 Simpson Ave\, Ocean City \n  \n \nThe Hot Club of Philadelphia was started in 2001 by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig. \nThey are an acoustic ensemble\, dedicated to playing ‘Gypsy Jazz.’ That’s the term used to describe the music pioneered by the legendary original ‘Hot Club of France Quintet\,’ which was led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli.  Django and Grappelli were attempting to do their own version of American ‘Hot Jazz\,’ as played by artists like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They used acoustic guitars\, bass and violin\, rather than horns and drums. Grappelli and Django added some French and Gypsy flavor and created a blend of music that is quite popular and accessible. The HCPhilly mixes the original style of the HCOF\, along with their own modern influences. \nThe band performs as a trio\, quartet\, quintet\, etc.  There have been some changes in the line up through the years. Bassist Jim Stager has been with the group from the beginning. \nJoshua Machiz & Dylan Taylor also share bass duties. Dan Pearce is the 2nd guitarist\, and violinist Joseph Arnold is a key part of the group’s recordings and shows\, and clarinetists Bob Butryn and Paul Butler are also mainstays. \nThe band features vocalist Phyllis Chapell and they have collaborated with Denise King. \nTheir second CD\, ‘Gypsy Routes\,’ released in 2005\, features Chapell singing pieces like Edith Piaf’s ‘La Foule’ in French\, and ‘Cry Me a River’ [in English]. Barry also sings; early jazz pieces like ‘Georgia on My Mind\,’ and standards that were done by Sinatra or Nat ‘King’ Cole. Their eclectic mix also includes interpretations of songs by the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. \nThe group has performed for a wide range of venues\, including; The Kimmel Center’s PIFA Festival\, the area’s first ‘Diner en Blanc\,’ The World Café Live\, Sellersville Theater\, WHYY-NPR\, Musikfest-Bethlehem\, Pastorius Park Summer Festival\, the Philadelphia Folk Festival\, S.J. Pinelands Jazz Fest\, Media ‘Jazz BY Night\,’ series\, Rose Tree Park Summer Concerts\, The Barnes Foundation\, Phila Museum of Art\, the Mid-West Gypsy Swing Festival\, to name a few. \nTheir first CD\, ‘Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams\,’ 2010 was very well received\, and their new release\, ‘Gypsy Routes\,’ features guest spots by Howard Alden\, Titi Bamberger\, Larry McKenna\, Phyllis Chapell and Marty Grosz. One of the tracks\, Django Reinhardt’s ‘Tears\,’ was # 1 on Philly Jazz radio WRTI’s Hot 11 Countdown. \nFor more about The Hot Club of Philly\, visit www.reverbnation.com/hotclubphilly. \n

Walk of Fire\, his third album as leader was just released on the Posi-Tone Label. The album showcases Gillece’s compositions with an exciting septet\, featuring trumpeter Bruce Harris\, tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf\, and trombonist Michael Dease. It also features a stellar rhythm section with Adam Birnbaum on piano\, Clovis Nicolas on bass\, and Jason Tiemann on drums. His other two leader dates\, Dare to Be and debut album Mindset\, received excellent reviews in reputable jazz periodicals such as Downbeat and Jazziz. Both albums received extensive radio airplay and rose to the top 50 on the Jazzweek radio charts for several weeks. \nGillece has also been featured as a sideman on more than 30 other recordings. The most recent of these include albums by Walt Weiskopf\, Michael Dease\, Melody Gardot\, and Ensemble Novo\, a Philadelphia-based group dedicated to Brazilian repertoire. \nGillece continues to tirelessly play and compose for new projects based all over the tristate area. He has performed his music throughout the country at venues like Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, the Kimmel Center\, Smalls Jazz Club\, Smoke Jazz Club\, Fat Cat\, Yoshi’s\, Chris’ Jazz Cafe\, and many others. His approach to jazz and blues has a uniqueness unto itself . . ..”. That comment has special resonance in that Bollenback counts Benson high among his wide range of influences; these also include Carlos Santana\, Wes Montgomery\, Kenny Burrell\, John McLaughlin\, Johnny Winter\, and Jimi Hendrix (among guitarists)\, as well as such giants of improvisation and composition as pianists Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans\, and saxophonists Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. \nBollenback’s range and impressive discography as both sideman and leader speak for themselves. His two releases on Elephant Dreams Records “Brightness of Being” (ED4548) & “Invocation” (ED4550) remained on the USA Jazz Week charts for several months in 2007 and 2008 consecutively. “Invocation” was voted onto Downbeat’s Top 100 releases of 2008 and received wide critical acclaim in the international press garnering 4 and 5 star reviews in Jazz Times Magazine among others. \nIn 2011 Bollenback garnered a Grammy nomination for co-production on Joey DeFrancesco’s Never Can Say Goodbye (Hi Note)\, and also shares executive and co-producing credits with vocalist-composer Chris McNulty on her albums Dance Delicioso and her Whispers the Heart (Elefant Dreams). His international and national touring schedule currently include appearances with Joey DeFrancesco\, Mike LeDonne\, Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Gary Bartz\, and Shunzo Ohno\, as well as many appearances with his own trio. \nHis latest recording on Mayimba Jazz Music “Portraits in Space and Time”\, featuring all original music in a trio setting\, was released to critical acclaim in 2014. \n  \n\n  \n\nMatthew Parrish\n\nBorn in central California to hard-working\, music-loving parents of four children\, Matthew Parrish epitomizes the heart of jazz bass performance and livelihood.  Matthew has performed and recorded with many of the top names in jazz. Regina Carter\, Wynton Marsalis\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Paquito D’Rivera\, Houston Person\, Clark Terry\, Etta Jones\, Miri Ben-Ari\, James Williams\, Harry Sweets Edison\, James Newton\, Gary Thomas\, Greg Osby\, Stefon Harris\, Orrin Evans just to name a few. While on tour with Al Grey\, Matt performed with Clark Terry\, Marion McPartland\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Lou Donaldson\, Joe Cohn\, Savion Glover\, Bill Charlap and many others.
