The band stayed on to tour there for one year. The list of musicians with whom Phil Woods has performed and/or recorded reads like a Who’s Who of Jazz: Benny Goodman (with whom he toured the Soviet Union in 1962\, again for the State Department)\, Benny Carter\, Clark Terry (with whom he and Melba Liston founded the “Big Bad Band”)\, Bill Evans\, Michel Legrand\, Oliver Nelson\, Thelonious Monk\, Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Barnet are just a few of those stars. In 1968\, Phil went to live in Europe where he formed the European Rhythm Machine. Together they played all over the world until 1973 when Woods returned to the United States. After a brief stay in Los Angeles\, Phil moved back to the New York area and formed The Phil Woods Quartet (now Quintet).  Two of the original members of that group\, Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin\, are still with him almost thirty-five years later. Philip Wells Woods is a consistent poll winner\, the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Letters Degree from East Stroudsburg University and a 1994 inductee into The American Jazz Hall of Fame. The New School University presented him with the Beacons in Jazz Award in 2001\, and he is a 2007 NEA Jazz Master. In 2009 DePaul University presented Phil with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. In 2005\, Jazzed Media released the documentary Phil Woods: A Life in E Flat – Portrait of a Jazz Legend\, directed by Rich Lerner and produced by Graham Carter. On September 4\, 2015\, he performed a tribute to Charlie Parker with Stringsat the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild and announced at the end of the show that he would be retiring. He died on September 29\, 2015\, at the age of 83.

SUMMARY:Jazz Legacy Series featuring Pete Chavez
DESCRIPTION:Come out on the 20th of January and learn among other things how Pete Chavez was very instrumental in starting the South Jersey Jazz Society and other items about a very interesting life of this wonderful jazz saxophonist. \n \nPete Chavez  was born in Greeley\, Colorado and raised in Denver\, Colorado where he studied clarinet with Dr. William Gower\, editor of the Rubank Method books.  In 1955\, at 13 years of age\, he moved to Los Angeles where he played oboe with the Highland Park Symphony Orchestra\, and the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Orchestra during his high school years.  His early jazz influences included trumpeter Little Benny Harris\, bassist George Morrow\, and tenor saxophone giant Lin Halliday. \nIn the 1960s he moved to New Orleans where he became a fixture on the local jazz scene jamming all night most nights.  Then he toured the east coast with the “Woody Forrest Revue” ending up in Miami and where he landed a gig at the Knight Beat Club as sideman to a roster of soul stars.  He toured with the legendary Jackie Wilson and Jackie “Moms” Mabley before moving back to Denver around 1969.  In Denver\, he worked with Cedar Walton and “Big” John Patton\, with whom he formed a lasting and close friendship. \nIn 1973\, Chavez moved to Boston where he played with the some of the Brazilian musicians on the scene\, including trumpeter Claudio Roditi\, Alyrio Lima (Weather Report)\, and Raoul DeSousa (Brazil ’66).  Pete earned a good measure of notoriety with his own bands which included James Williams\, Boots Maleson\, and John Scofield\, to name a few. \nHe then moved to New York City to work with Saheb Sarbib’s Multinational Big Band.  He recorded a CD with Sarbib featuring Kirk Litesy\, Rashied Ali and Joe Ford.  He worked and toured in Dom Um Romao’s “Hotmosphere”.  He recorded “Blue Planet Man” with John Patton\, Eddie Gladden\, Bill Saxton\, John Zorn\, and Ed Cherry.  While in New York City\, Chavez performed with Archie Shep\, John Hicks\, Jaco Pastorius\, Marcus Miller\, Cameron Brown\, Woody Shaw\, and Mike Stern\, among others. \nChavez currently lives in the Philadelphia area where he has performed with local legends\, Bootsie Barnes\, Mickey Roker\, Shirley Scott\, Norman Connors\, Byron Landham\, Tim Warfield\, Lee Smith\, Webb Thomas\, and many more. \nJanuary 20 at 11AM\nJosie Kelly’s\, 908 Shore Road Somers Point.   \nAdmission is free\, but free will donations will be gladly accepted. \nFor any questions\, email info@southjerseyjazz.org. \n \n \n \n \n \n The Legacy series is based on an interview /performance program we first encountered at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Many of our Jazz Society members and music fans in general have a natural curiosity regarding the musicians who have entertained us through the years.\n\nWe rarely have an opportunity to interact and learn about our local musicians. This series will combine an interview with musical interludes and a chance to meet the artist\, and  ask a question or two.
