SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Tony Miceli Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Tony Miceli Quartet\nPhiladelphia has a long history as an influential jazz hub in the U.S. It’s produced many of the world’s best known jazz musicians in a tradition that continues to this day. Billie Holiday\, Jimmy Heath\, Stan Getz\, McCoy Tyner\, Jimmy Smith\, Charles Earland\, Shirley Scott & Christian McBride are a few of those jazz giants. \nOn SUNDAY\, OCTOBER 5th\, our series’ second fall program honors that tradition with an ALL-PHILLY show. A quartet with some of today’s best known Philly jazz artists is featured. Led by renowned vibes player TONY MICELI\, it includes guitarist/pianist ELIJAH COLE\, bassist MADISON RAST & drummer DAN MONAGHAN. \nVibes master Miceli learned several instruments while growing up in New Jersey. However\, during his college years at Philly’s University of the Arts\, his attraction to the vibes grew & his dedication to it became permanent. Calling Philly home since 1982’s graduation\, Miceli’s since become a highly important & prolific voice in jazz circles on the vibraphone. \nAs a performer\, he’s worked with Peter Bernstein\, Dave Liebman\, Joe Magnarelli\, Larry McKenna\, Steve Slagle & Dave Stryker\, among others. While continuing to work at jazz clubs\, he’s also  performed at important jazz festivals in Canada\, Germany\, South Korea & Peru. His resume also contains recorded work as a leader & sideman & teaching credits at Philly’s University of the Arts & Temple University & at Southern Mississippi University.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Nick Hempton Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Nick Hempton Quartet\nOur Jazz & Blues Showcase returns this fall with an exciting show on Sunday afternoon\, SEPTEMBER 7th\, featuring the soulful\, blues playing of saxophone sensation NICK HEMPTON. Support in his quartet is from well-known\, veteran jazz artists MATT CHERTKOFF\, guitar\, LUCAS BROWN\, organ\, & drummer JASON TIEMANN. \nGrowing up in Australia\, Hempton was influenced by saxophone icons Dexter Gordon\, Gene Ammons & Sonny Stitt. They became the driving force in his desire for a career in jazz & an opportunity to continue the music of those jazz legends. His belief was that the best way to achieve that goal was to move to New York\, the U.S. ‘s hotbed of jazz. Still in his twenties\, he relocated in 2004. \nIn N.Y.\, he worked to establish himself as a fixture in its jazz scene. The superb professional resume he’s earned since\, justified the decision to move. Among others\, he gained popularity performing with jazz stalwarts Roy Hargrove\, Victor Lewis\, Larry Willis\, Peter Bernstein\, Joe Magnarelli & Jerry Weldon. As his popularity grew\, demand for his playing also did & opportunities at important jazz venues in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Asia & back in Australia opened for him. They continue today\, as Hempton’s growing resume shows continued performances worldwide & more of his recorded work.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Kyle Koehler Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Kyle Koehler Trio\nOur spring shows continue on Sunday\, May 4th. Jazz organ giant KYLE KOEHLER headlines. His trio includes guest guitarist ED CHERRY & noted drummer JASON TIEMANN. \nFor three decades\, Kyle Koehler’s been one of jazz’s most important & consistent voices on organ. Influenced by organ legends Shirley Scott & Charles Earland growing up in Philly & armed with a college degree in music performance & composition\, his career path gained traction after college with a  move to NYC. There in the late ’90s\, he began leading trios & performing with top jazz artists\, with Lou Donaldon\, Jimmy Heath & David “Fathead” Newman included. Early accolades for his organ playing include “Rising Star”status from Downbeat magazine & being chosen to tour Africa as a “Jazz Ambassador” for the Kennedy Center & U.S. State Dep’t. Currently continuing to perform across the U.S.\, Europe & Japan\, he also records & does Hammond B3 educational workshops. Dedicated to keeping the organ tradition alive in jazz\, Koehler’s playing honors those great organists who preceded him. Many are no longer with us from its earlier jazz “Heyday.” Among them are Jimmy Smith\, Jimmy McGriff\, Jack McDuff\, Richard “Groove” Holmes\, Dr. Lonnie Smith & Joey DeFrancesco. \nSpecial guest guitarist ED CHERRY\, a Connecticut native\, is an expressive player with a hip\, melodic approach that’s similar to what vocalists offer in their songs. While he mentions Kenny Burrell\, Grant Green & Wes Montgomery as influences\, his style is clearly his own & unlike those who play with excessive finger notes. In his fifth decade of playing\, he’s best known for his work in Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet & big band from 1978 to ’92. Following Gillespie’s 1993 death\, Cherry began leading his own groups & recording. His resume  includes numerous leader & sideman CDs & important work with trumpeter John Faddis\, sax player Paquito D’Rivera & organists Jimmy Smith\, Dr. Lonnie Smith & John Patton.
