SUMMARY:Tom Angello's All-Star Jazz Series w/ Andy Lalasis\, Paula Johns & Aaron Graves
DESCRIPTION:Tom Angello’s All-Star Jazz Series\n \n \n \n \n \n Now on Monday Nights!\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Paula Johns – VocalsAaron Graves – PianoAndy Lalasis – BassTom Angello – Drums \n \n \n \n \n \n Paula Johns\nPaula is an accomplished cabaret singer and jazz vocalist who hails from Philadelphia. She is often compared to Ella\, and some of the great contemporaries of that era\, but Paula brings her own distinctive panache to each song she sings…expecially the songs from The Great American Songbooks of Porter\, Rogers & Hart\, Jobim\, Bacharach and others. \nWith a voice like butter\, she enjoys a great lyric that tugs at your heartstring\, as well as a lyric that will make you fall off your seat with laughter. Her passion for the music ignites the emotions of her audiences and allows them to feel the stories that each song tells. \n \n \n \n \n \n Andy Lalasis\nAndy Lalasis was the bassist who accompanied all the visiting headliners at Steve Wynn’s Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. Those headliners included everyone from Ann Hampton Calloway\, Keely Smith\, Joanie Sommers\, Billy Eckstine and Billy Daniels. \nAndy spent the next 11 years at Resorts Casino as a member of Merv Grif fin’s Coconut Ballroom Orchestra doing Merv’s NY’s Eve TV shows and playing for the biggest stars who appeared there.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The James Austin\, Jr. Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz & Blues Showcase final show of the season we welcome the gifted pianist James Austin\, Jr. on Sunday\, June 23rd. Mr. Austin’s classic jazz trio includes noted jazzmen Ben Rubens on bass and drummer Kayvon Gordon. \nChicago native Austin’s professional career in jazz blossomed when he became an award-winner at the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in 2005. Extensive mentoring from the legendary jazz pianist Barry Harris followed for him\, as did the growth of his performances with many jazz notables. Guitarists Peter Bernstein\, Rusell Malone & Bobby Broom were among them\, as were horn players Frank Morgan\, Joe Magnarelli & drummers Winard Harper & Willie Jones. Austin’s also done well arranging music. This was on display in a recent\, well received CD of his\, “Songs in the Key of Wonder.” It made for great jazz listening from tunes that were made famous by the legendary Stevie Wonder.

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: The Ilya Lushtak Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Jazz & Blues series’ next spring show is on Sunday afternoon\, May 19. It features the playing & vocal stylings of renowned jazz guitarist ILYA LUSHTAK. His N.Y. quartet includes pianist OSCAR WILLIAMS II\, bassist KYLE COLINA & drummer O.C. DAVIS. \nRussian born ILYA LUSHTAK moved with his family to San Francisco as a child. He grew up there\, as did his interest in a music career. As an adult in the 1990s\, he began getting opportunities to showcase the jazz “chops” he’d developed by getting gigs with some established & noted San Francisco jazz artists. Important among them were pianist Larry Vuckovich & saxophonist Noel Jewkes. \nWith these experiences & a newfound confidence in a jazz career\, Lushtak was motivated to move & follow his career dreams in New York City. By the early 2000s\, that paid off as he began finding performance & recording work with a long list of veteran jazz luminaries. Beginning with Frank Wess & Hank Jones\, it also included Barry Harris\, Jimmy Cobb\, Cedar Walton\, Louis Hayes\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Charles Earland\, Mel Rhyne & Jimmy Lovelace. Along with his more recent work with contemporaries David Hazeltine\, Joe Magnarelli & Grant Stewart\, Lushtak continues to record & to delight jazz audiences in performance across the U.S. & abroad.

SUMMARY:OC Library Spring Concerts: Sofia Talvik
DESCRIPTION:Sofia Talvik – Americana / Folk with Swedish Roots \nSofia Talvik is a rare artist and an avid storyteller with a voice comparable to giants like Joni Mitchell\, or as the Folk/Americana Magazine NoDepression said it “A singer/songwriter who is able to evoke the essence of Laurel Canyon circa the ‘60s as expressed in the work of Joni Mitchell\, Judy Collins\, Buffy Sainte-Marie and others who were able to paint beautiful tapestries from words and music.” \nPrepare yourself for a unique and intimate evening\, not unlike the 70’s coffee houses and speakeasies. You will be up close and personal with a world class act that has played big festivals like Lollapalooza and SxSW and opened for artists like Maria McKee and David Duchovny (X-files\, Californication). It is in this kind of setting where she can casually joke and communicate with the audience that her strength as a performer shines the most. \nHer delicate songs are performed in an intimate way\, showing off Sofia’s angelic voice enhanced only by a tasteful mix of harmonies and delays\, accompanied by the steady picking of her acoustic guitar and the rhythm section consisting of her own two feet\, bells and a stomp box. \nShe’s an experienced international touring artist that has toured through 48 U.S states\, many of the countries in Europe and faraway places like New Zealand. \nMore information at https://www.oceancitylibrary.org/events/spring-concerts-sofia-talvik \n

SUMMARY:Jazz & Blues Showcase: Radam Schwartz Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Following our wildly successful Tribute to Larry McKenna earlier this month\, we are continuing on Sunday afternoon\, April 28th\, featuring jazz organist RADAM SCHWARTZ. His quartet includes noted saxophonist GENE GHEE\, rising star guitarist ILAN EISENWEIG & in-demand drummer BYRON LANDHAM. \nFor more than four-decades musician Radam Schwartz has dedicated his career to jazz as a performer & educator. Drawn to music at an early age\, he learned both piano & saxophone. He became proficient at the piano\, though by high school & in college\, including Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, his desire to be a jazz organist grew. After graduating in 1975\, the desire & hard work to become a jazz organist paid off for him in the late 1970s & continues today. His performing credits include working with many jazz artists. Notable among them are vocalists Al Hibbler & Arthur Prysock\, saxophonists David “Fathead” Newman\, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis & “Red” Prysock\, Bassist Ron Carter & guitarist Russell Malone. His resume also shows extensive recordings as a sideman & eight more as a leader. \nEqually important to Schwartz is educating people about music\, the history of jazz & mentoring young people with interest. Though New York born\, he’s resided in New Jersey since the 1970s & is hugely supportive of New Jersey’s jazz scene. He believes it deserves the same importance that’s attached to jazz in Philly & New York & has advanced that idea by teaching in a variety of New Jersey settings. Included are Rutgers University\, the Jazz Institute of NJ\, as music director\, the Middlesex County Arts High School\, as Artist-in-Residence\, Red Bank’s “Jazz Arts Academy” & “Jazz House Kids” in Montclair.
