He is known for his interpretations of American popular songs and has recorded albums featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael\, Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Time magazine wrote\, “Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved…no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is\, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.” \nIn 1997\, Charlap formed the Bill Charlap Trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation)\, now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. Charlap has recorded seven albums for Blue Note Records and received two Grammy Award nominations\, for Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and most recently The Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard. \nCharlap is the artistic director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at the 92nd Street Y. He has produced several concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center and an evening of George Gershwin’s music at the Hollywood Bowl. \nBorn in New York City\, Charlap began playing the piano at age three. His father was Broadway composer Moose Charlap\, whose credits include Peter Pan\, and his mother is singer Sandy Stewart\, who appeared on the Ed Sullivan and Perry Como shows and earned a Grammy nomination for her recording of “My Coloring Book.” In 2005\, Charlap and Stewart released the acclaimed CD\, Love Is Here To Stay (Blue Note). \nCharlap is married to renowned jazz pianist Renee Rosnes. The two artists often collaborate in a duo piano setting. Charlap and Rosnes released Double Portrait\, on the Blue Note label. \nKenny Washington (drums) was born in Brooklyn. In 1977\, while still in his teens\, he worked with Lee Konitz and his nonet. He has been a member of the Bill Charlap Trio for the past thirteen years and has performed and recorded with dozens of major artists\, giving him a discography of hundreds of titles. Artists include Benny Carter\, Betty Carter\, Johnny Griffin\, Ron Carter\, Clark Terry\, Milt Jackson\, Tommy Flanagan\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Arturo Sandoval and Benny Goodman. Washington is a noted jazz historian and radio personality; he has written liner notes and helped prepare re-releases by Art Blakey\, Count Basie and others\, and has also been a disc jockey on WBGO and Sirius satellite jazz radio. He currently serves on the faculties of Purchase College\, State University of New York and The Juilliard School\, teaching drums and jazz history. \nSean Smith (bass) has been an integral part of the international jazz scene for more than 25 years. DESCRIPTION:Hot Club of Philadelphia\nFeaturing Barry Wahrhaftig\, Joe Arnold\,\nDan Pearce\, and Josh Machiz. \nOcean City Free Public Library\, 1735 Simpson Ave\, Ocean City \n  \n \nThe Hot Club of Philadelphia was started in 2001 by guitarist Barry Wahrhaftig. \nThey are an acoustic ensemble\, dedicated to playing ‘Gypsy Jazz.’ That’s the term used to describe the music pioneered by the legendary original ‘Hot Club of France Quintet\,’ which was led by guitarist Django Reinhardt and Violinist Stephane Grappelli.  Django and Grappelli were attempting to do their own version of American ‘Hot Jazz\,’ as played by artists like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. They used acoustic guitars\, bass and violin\, rather than horns and drums. Grappelli and Django added some French and Gypsy flavor and created a blend of music that is quite popular and accessible. The HCPhilly mixes the original style of the HCOF\, along with their own modern influences. \nThe band performs as a trio\, quartet\, quintet\, etc.  There have been some changes in the line up through the years. Bassist Jim Stager has been with the group from the beginning. \nJoshua Machiz & Dylan Taylor also share bass duties. Dan Pearce is the 2nd guitarist\, and violinist Joseph Arnold is a key part of the group’s recordings and shows\, and clarinetists Bob Butryn and Paul Butler are also mainstays. \nThe band features vocalist Phyllis Chapell and they have collaborated with Denise King. \nTheir second CD\, ‘Gypsy Routes\,’ released in 2005\, features Chapell singing pieces like Edith Piaf’s ‘La Foule’ in French\, and ‘Cry Me a River’ [in English]. Barry also sings; early jazz pieces like ‘Georgia on My Mind\,’ and standards that were done by Sinatra or Nat ‘King’ Cole. Their eclectic mix also includes interpretations of songs by the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. \nThe group has performed for a wide range of venues\, including; The Kimmel Center’s PIFA Festival\, the area’s first ‘Diner en Blanc\,’ The World Café Live\, Sellersville Theater\, WHYY-NPR\, Musikfest-Bethlehem\, Pastorius Park Summer Festival\, the Philadelphia Folk Festival\, S.J. Richard Budesa is an accomplished pianist and master B3 organist and Robert Budesa is one of the top guitarists in America. They are also both superb vocalists and they have written compositions that have been featured on NPR and Temple University’s WRTI Radio. Together they have recorded and performed with some of the greats in the music business including – Grover Washington Jr.\, Jimmy Heath\, Billy Paul\, George Duke\, Lenny White\, Bernard Perdie\, Johnny and Papa John Defrancesco and Jimmy Bruno. \nThey were recently featured on NPR’s “American Routes” and “Jazz Night in America”! \n \n\n \nVictor North \nSaxophonist Victor North came to Philadelphia from Alaska\, after a year at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts\, to immerse himself in the “City Of Brotherly Love’s” rich jazz culture which has been home to so many jazz greats\, most notably\, John Coltrane\, who became a major influence of Victor’s as a teenager in the far away North. Some of the many great musicians that Victor has had the opportunity to work with since moving to the East Coast are Mickey Roker\, Charles Fambrough\, John Swana\, Orrin Evans\, Terrel Stafford\, Ronnie Burrage\, Jimmy Bruno\, Duane Eubanks\, Duck Scott\, Byron Landham\, organists Pat Bianchi and Jared Gold and he spent five years playing with Afro-Cuban Jazz pianist\, Elio Villafranca. For the last twelve years\, Victor has led his own group\, Three Blind Mice\, with organist Lucas Brown and drummer Wayne Smith\, Jr.\, who released their first CD\, The Outsider\, in 2012. Her Goal: “To take my audience on a Journey\, I want them to feel something special.”\n\nA longtime resident of Brigantine\, NJ\, Cathy Rocco\, finds herself embracing her passion for Music and the many rewards it brings. .\n\n\n\n\nA musical heavyweight\, saxophonist Alex Foster has been a part of many of the world’s most influential sounds to date. Best known in recent years for his work as the alto saxophonist in the house band of the Saturday Night Live Band\, he has also shared the stage with numerous world-class performers in varying genres. Besides being a member of the SNL house band\, he is also the musical director of the Mingus Big Band. \nIn the jazz scene\, he has been heard on recordings and has performed alongside greats such as Jaco Pastorius\, Herbie Hancock\, Clark Terry\, Jack DeJohnette\, McCoy Tyner and Miles Davis to list a few. \nHis versatility as an artist is not only present in the jazz and pop music scene\, but is also prominent in the classical realm as well\, performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, the Oakland Symphony\, the San Francisco Symphony and the National Symphony.
